Historic Preservation And Renovation

The spirit of Overbay Houseworks is defined by art and tradition. We specialize in the construction of custom furniture and homes that not only honor and exemplify the techniques and styles of historical architecture, but also serve contemporary needs and your most extravagant styles. We appreciate and cherish the legacy of historic homes while simultaneously embracing the modernization of appliances and lifestyles. We are always sure to tactfully incorporate these components into our goal of devising graceful, time-honored designs.

We provide experienced insight and design, durable work, and impassioned regard for culture and architectural integrity. As we work on a visceral level and build extensively by hand, we take pride in these methods and find deep fulfillment in traditional, intimate woodworking practices.

Our work is infused with a trinity of Vitruvian principles; durability, utility, and beauty. These concepts comprise the foundation upon which we conduct our craft. Overbay Houseworks has been providing master craftsmanship for over 46 years.

Kitchens:

Our kitchens are designed to integrate your home’s architectural heritage with today’s needs and your lifestyle. Ed’s decades of expertise in kitchen design allow him to create an exquisite harmony of aesthetics, efficiency, and functionality. Every component is carefully handcrafted with special attention to each detail, from grain matching to finishing touches. Having worked intimately with wood over the decades, Ed had developed a robust understanding of how to create durable kitchens that serve their purposes advantageously for generations.

Architectural Woodworking

We believe that it is incumbent on an architectural structure to express the spirit of its age as well as the spirits of those that have occupied it. It must interpret a way of life, validate its place in its time and articulate the nature of architecture. With an expansive and seasoned understanding of wood and its properties, Ed provides elaborate insight on the best lumber for any particular project. We design, fabricate, and install furniture-caliber entry doors, staircases, mantels, wall and ceiling paneling, cabinetry, columns, and much more.

Fine Furniture:

At Overbay Houseworks, we concern ourselves with the dance between form and function. Whether you have a penchant for Arts-and-Crafts, Mid-Century Modern, Contemporary, or a uniquely personal style, we design and build bench-crafted furniture and handsome interiors that will efficiently serve your needs, and endure decades and be treasured for lifetimes. Using time-honored joinery techniques, meticulous selection and matching of grains, painstaking attention to detail, and enduring finishes, we passionately build truly fine furniture.

Project Planning And Consulting:

Our comprehensive design approach enables us to manage, or provide guidance, on any project; new construction, remodel or renovation. We provide insight, evaluation, design and layout, selection of appropriate subcontractors, logistics, permitting, historic analysis, project management and implementation- beginning to end.

Each design is handled with an intricately customized approach. We focus on personal architectural nuances and how to make them realities. We take pride in transmuting these aspirations into stable and practical architectural expressions.

We believe architecture should be edifying, allowing all values of life to be possible, thus we take a long view in our approach to design and are experienced in the implementation of aging-in-place strategies. This approach allows us to help clients live comfortably and independently for as long as possible in his/her home and it minimizes the need to replace and repair as much as possible. We coordinate each construction phase depending on your needs and priorities.

Design Services:

When consulting with homeowners, builders, or architects, Ed brings creative and effective design solutions in accord with the lifestyle and aesthetic needs of each client. With a lifetime of experience in architectural, structural, and historical customs, he reliably delivers refined interiors and exteriors with cohesive design language and flow. Ed works closely with clients to be sure each design is tailor-made with utmost care and consideration.

About Ed Overbay:

Ed Overbay is a woodworker, a builder, engineer, and fundamentally an artist. His dedication to the wood craft is relentless and ever-evolving. He’d developed an early appreciation for historic architecture, building technologies and craftsmanship during the years he spent working on vintage homes alongside his father, an old-school builder familiar with all aspects of construction.

It was then when he had begun honing his skills in foundation construction, framing, plumbing, wiring, plastering, cabinetmaking and trim. This work provided motivation to pursue design and building as a vocation, and then he’d turned his hand to fine woodworking. On his shelf, you can be sure to find the musings of cerebral powerhouses Leonardo DaVinci and Carl Sagan.

In the realm of woodwork and architecture, he is inspired by masters such as Charles and Henry Greene, Wharton Esherick, Sam Maloof, George Nakashima and James Krenov. Ed has built a tenacious reputation for his work. His designs can be found in many fine homes and his work is exhibited in galleries throughout the region.

Historic Preservation And Renovation

Overbay Houseworks specializes in transforming vintage structures into homes that embrace contemporary living without compromising architectural identity and heritage. We cherish and appreciate the aesthetics and legacy of historic homes, yet we also recognize that our world has changed greatly since those homes were built. With the advent of refrigeration, ventilation, modern appliances and electronics, older homes often struggle to accommodate modern lifestyles in a graceful manner. This is where forty years of design, master craftsmanship, and artistic creativity come into play to create something truly personalized, extraordinary, and satisfying.

Our kitchens are designed to connect your home’s architectural heritage with today’s needs and your lifestyle. Ed’s decades of expertise in kitchen design allows him to create a masterpiece of aesthetics, efficiency, and functionality.
