Bo Sullivan
Arcalus Period Design

Arcalus is a broadly and deeply knowledgeable design consulting resource for old-house owners, architects, designers, writers, researchers, and preservation groups involved in projects where a rich and meaningful connection to the past has high value.

Specializing in all aspects of American building culture between 1870 and 1970, Arcalus provides expert research, documentation, and design guidance and creative inspiration to anyone seeking the authentic voice of history.

Architectural History & Design Inspiration

Whether a project dates from the Gilded Age or the Space Age, Arcalus Period Design offers richly informed creative inspiration and historically grounded design solutions that embrace and celebrate old-house history and character. Drawing from an exceptional archive of rare original books, trade catalogs, photos and other primary source materials, Arcalus [AR-kuh-lus] provides restoration guidance for exterior renovations, old-house additions, and kitchen and bath remodels, as well as date-appropriate product ideas for lighting, hardware, plumbing, doors, windows, millwork, cabinetry, wallpaper, drapery, furnishings, and paint colors.

Special services include the Arcalus Old-House Assessment (a two-hour “forensic” walk-through revealing the ways your home has and hasn’t changed over the years, distinguishing key original features from later additions, and identifying special surviving details to save or restore) and the Arcalus Old-House History (a professional dig into your Portland home’s past through maps, property files, city directories, census records and other resources to bring its story and former owners back into the present).

About Bo & His Other Work

Before founding Arcalus Period Design in 2009, Bo Sullivan was the senior designer and architectural historian at Rejuvenation in Portland. Son of an antiques dealer and an old-time hardware store owner, Bo grew up in a 200-year-old house in a 300-year old-town where he spent his youth digging up old bottles and exploring abandoned garages and overgrown cemeteries. After acquiring an architectural degree from the North Carolina State University School of Design in 1988, Bo spent several years as a designer and restoration carpenter before his 20-year association with Rejuvenation.

Beyond consulting through Arcalus, Bo partners exclusively with Classic Sash & Door Company to provide exceptional period-authentic custom entry doors, and also owns Bolling & Company, the country’s leading source for museum-quality original American antique wallpapers from the 1880s to the 1930s.
